What could be the reason my 5-year-old CD player is no longer functioning?

Its telling you to let it die. Just buy another. Hit up Wal-Mart. And if your in Graham Texas, I'll sell ya one, lol

After 5 years it's time for a new one. That happened to my last one too. The cd player quit working but the radio worked fine. I just had to buy a new one.

Well first of all we are in 2006 i think u should get an ipod of some kind,,but if u dont have the money well start saving or buy another one like your one thats not working and it will die in 5years again but ipods last longers and they are just better...and 5 years is along time i mean i kept mine for like a year but if u wanna save money then i understand . . mabey the batteries are dead, but sum things never last us HUMANS! . . hope that suites u!!
