They decided that they could make more money selling cell phones with lousy calling plans and no repair techs and overpriced low-budget TVs, DVD players, and other consumer electronics than they could selling actual electronic components. So now you need to live in an area with a Fry's or a similar mom-and-pop electronics store or you need to buy your resistors and capacitors online, which is always annoying.
