What is the difference between single CCD and 3CCD imaging systems?

Most cameras/recorders have one CCD, which is a chip that senses and combines all three colors (red, green, blue) into one image. A 3 CCD camera has a separate chip for each of the three colors. This allows higher processing and better resoluton of images.. . Btw, CCD=Charged Coupled Device.
