Try this: get a codec.. . An example is the Divx codec.

in media player ... Tools > options > file types. Make sure avi is enabled. If you have another player, it may have become the default for avi. If it still won't play it, you might not have the right codec needed.

What operating system are you running...and have you updated your media player? I had this problem when I restored my winme computer with its original disks...had to update my windows media player before it would play the avi files

Media Player has too many problems. I've switched to Winamp (free, winamp.com), even though I rarely play media. It’s free and, best of all, it works.
