That's a good question. I guess most people don't have good imaginations and see reading as work instead of fun.

It takes less effort to watch TV than concentrating on what is read in a book.

It might seem boring or a waste of time. I personally enjoy reading. It helps to build vocabulary and imagination.

because people have been trained (by years of watching advertising) to have short attention span and to be only impressed by strong stimuli. . so now they can not concentrate for long enough to read a book. . or if they read a book they need one where the main character dies eaten by piranha every other page (to keep their interest awake). . it is going even worse - even during tv they switch channels like krazy and don't get anything out of any show.... . advertising messing out our brains my friend.... . it is the price you pay for "free access to information"

it's easier, pick up a book, you actually have to use your brain to read & imagine what's going on. turn on the tv. no reading or imagination required, it's already provided

A. Lazy - you don't have to use the energy to imagine if the actors and directors have done all the imagining for you.. B. Pretty colors, lights and sounds are mesmerizing. I once read that watching TV is intellectually comparable to watching a fireplace. The mental stimulation is the same.. C. Reading takes...well the ability to read. Many people these days find reading to be a chore instead of a pleasure.. D. Reading takes longer than TV, a cardinal sin in this day and time.. and. E. TV is pumped into your house and all day and night. A book you actually have to go get.

Reading a book requires more time than watching TV. With television, you know how much time you're going to devote to something- with a book you never know. If someone calls or comes over, you can keep the TV on in the background and carry on conversations with people. You can't do that with a book (not well, anyway). Reading also requires the use of imagination as well as literacy. How many people do you know with both these days?
