Why do we use the letters 'b' and 'm' to represent the y-intercept and slope in a linear equation?

The letter "m" is used because it is the first letter of the French verb "monter",meaning to rise or to ascend. As for "b", I do not know.

A possible idea: "m" and "b" provide enough visual contrast to "x" and "y" and don't look much like numbers (I doubt anyone would even confuse a "b" for a "6").. . Again, that's just a guess.

creative mathematics. whenever you invent a new equation you can use any letter your want. (m and be may have something to do with Latin). . . I checked it out and there is no Latin. Check the source provided to more info.
