Use nero, wmp only burns music CDs. Plus you need to covert your .avi files to .vob .bup and.ifo files in order to play in a dvd player. But if you have a DIVX compatible dvd player you should be ok (use nero to burn as a data disc)

Use Nero 6 or better. It has option on making your own VCD, SVCD or DVD.
