Because they want you to contact them about the property. They are sales people and want to talk to you.

Because the price is literally just a number. The price of the house can fluctuate days apart by huge sums. In a housing boom, people will often over bid on a house so you don't want to give them a starting point or the idea they can buy the house on the spot at that price.

so estate agents can lie to you, they will find out what the max is you can afford and charge you that. also it would mean more signs or attachments to signs as they re use them

Just call the number and ask for the asking price....

because a sales price is always negotiable and may rise and fall due to any previous bids or because of appreciation or depreciation

A person would not call on properties not in their price range if prices were listed on for sale signs. While that most likely would not hurt a "for sale by owner" it would hurt a real estate rep as once you call if the specific property you called about doesn't work for you they will try to find one that does.

So you're forced to ask an agent, who can then follow up with you and generally sell to you. It's annoying. Would save everyone's time if they just posted the price

It is simply down to cost. An estate agent has hundreds of For Sale boards produced, either directly or via a specialist company that erects the boards for them. If each one had the price on it then the printer would charge more for printing the boards. This extra cost would be substantial as they offer a discount for ordering large quanitities (like most companies - bulk discount). Somebody has to cover this cost and it would of course be the paying client. Personally I do not believe it offers enough of a benefit to generate higher cost of selling.. . All agents advertise asking prices - in the newspapers or on the internet. So it isn't for any other reason apart from cost.
