What is the meaning behind the phrase 'sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite'?

1) "Sleep Tight" refers to when beds were made by stringing up ropes to hold the mattress stuffing...Pulling the ropes tight made the bed more comfortable.. 2) With the advent of modern building codes, medical practices and such, bed bugs are not too common anymore, but there is a bug called a bed bug, which will bite a person during their sleep...A bed with a big infestation will provide the sleeper with a large collection of bites by morning. I don't believe that there is any disease factor assosicated with these bites...just bites.. . It is a wish for you to have healthy, comfortable sleep.

I think 04 is right. But I always wondered as a kid. And now that there really are such bugs, in some areas, how does one not let them bite? Doesn't that fact sort of give the phrase, a new meaniing?

in the olden days.. i think it was common for there to be bugs in people's beds... thats kinda gross.

Sleep tight-it was believed that if you wrapped yourself tightly in blankets the bed bugs would have a harder time biting you (bed bugs left a nasty bit and some diseases)

it's just saying rest peacefully. it probably originated in an area which had a lot of bed bugs which are real
