Use your fingers. Instead of pulling them straight out with a cat brush...grab the mat with both hands and break it apart pulling sideways in opposite directions without pulling the hair out. With a few pulls and a little petting in between, the mat will easily break apart...then brush.

well you need to cut them out. because brushing won't work. She could get them out herself but that normally makes a cat sick. But if you take care of your cat and brush it rugularly then it shouldn't get matts...

First get her to a groomer to get the mats out. They hurt her.and you could hurt her trying to get them out.Once they are out you can start by brushing her on a regular basis. A good comb is need too. To groom your cat start by brushing the part she doesn't like you to do.do this area first. then move to sides, then to the head and neck area. then last do the long strokes down the back that she likes, she will remember this and each time your grooming will be better for you both. Remember the tender areas are rear ends, and under the front legs. Some cats don't like their belly done either. be careful gentle and kind. Bad mats must be shaved out by your groomer. it will grow back.Cats can and do bite and scratch you if they don't like what you are doing.

I take my persian to the vet and have her shaved. She is almost 19 years old and has trouble grooming herself. After she gets shaved she seems so happy. Then I try to keep her brushed until the matts come back then its back for another shave. You could probably do it at home but since mine is so old they put her to sleep to shave her to keep her from going into shock.
