What are some techniques to prevent tearing up while cutting onions?

I hear puting them in cold water for a while helps before cutting them.. and wearing (sun)glasses helps too. . I'm not sure if this works or not.

Keep a bowl of fresh water to dip them in prior to cutting that works great.

This always works for me. Whenever I need to cut onions, I holler, "Hey Katie, how about cutting these onions for me?" Onions haven't bothered my eyes ever since I started using this method. This will probably work even if your daughter isn't named Katie.

I read this somewhere, and it's always worked for me.. Don't breathe through your nose. Keep your mouth open and inhale and exhale that way.

Also, be sure to use a SHARP knife. It will make your life in the kitchen oh so much easier. One thing I don't like about the photos is that she's using a really small knife. Use a good chef's knife instead.

I keep a little water in my mouth while I cut onions. The water somehow attracts and neutralizes the particles that cause irritation. I don't know why, but it works for me every time. P.S. It doesn't work to use this trick midway through cutting.

that's never going to happen... onions release a chemical when they are cut that irritates our eyes... even if u put it under wter or try a bunch of stuff it's not going to happen.. i'm sorry.. i tried everything... :(
