hello, as a general rule boa,s give birth to live young and pythons lay eggs which need incubating at the right temperatures, the snakes know exactly where to lay the eggs in order for them to be incubated correctly, most egg bearers contain their eggs for about 40days, after laying the incubation period is also about 40 days, after which the young cut through the shell of the leathery egg with an egg tooth this subsequently drops off, they feed of a small yoke sack for a week or so, after which they are able to catch prey for themselves. live bearers leave their young immediately after birth.

Most snakes are oviparous. This means they lay eggs, from which the young later hatch. To protect the babies inside them, the eggs are tough and leathery, and the young snakes sometimes have a difficult time breaking out of them. Each baby snake has a sharp bump, called an egg tooth, on top of its snout. This helps the young to cut through the shell. Some snakes give birth to live young. The unborn young are in thin casings, or sacs, inside the mother. They hatch from these egg sacs just before or immediately after birth. These snakes are called ovoviviparous.

Sam is right. Some snakes are live bearers, some lay eggs. Many snakes leave the eggs after laying, but some incubate their eggs and are very good protective mothers. However after hatching the young are on their own. You can find lots of books about snakes at your local library, in bookstores(Reptiles mag has a good article this month) or visit www.kingsnake.com. Most snake breeders have in-depth articles on their sites about breeding and care of females and eggs.
