Why do earthquakes seem to occur more often in the early morning or at night, rather than during the day?

They do occur during the day. The huge quake that hit San Franciso in 1989 happened around 5pm.

Quakes are caused by the shift of tectonic plates under the crust of the earth. I don't think time (in the traditional sence) has anything to do with it. Maybe just coincidence.

Earthquakes do not know time, they occur wherever and whenever, just more coincidence that you have noticed this.

0800 is early? you must lead a nice life. But the point I would like to make is this: they don't only happen "early" or during the night. 2 years ago, here in Taiwan, we had a big earthquake that killed several people and wounded many more, doung a fair bit of damage, and it was at about 3 in the afternoon. We get earthquakes almost daily and 24 horus a day. Most are too small to feel, or small enough that they do nothing but make you feel a little dizzy. We get them during school (I am a teacher) every 2 or 3 weeks.
