This way, whenever you see the soldier, it gives the impression that s/he is always moving forward, advancing, never retreating.. . This is the Promotion Board Study Guide Answer:. The flag is worn on the right shoulder to give the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward.

look at them if they are walking forward, the flag would be the same was as if carried on a stand. the stars are the part that is near a flag pole and the person is moving forward. if it was going the other way we would be retreating, and to use one of my fav saying "retreat? like hell we just got here!"

The flag of the United States always faces to the right, meaning the stars are on the left. when placed on the right side of the body, the flag must face to the right, but the only way to do so is to show it in reverse. pretend it's a transparent flag.

the answer is " the stars should be closest to your heart", and since the patch is on the right shoulder, its backwards. Now thats what I was told when I was in kuwait in 91.

The flag looks backwards because thats the way we have to wear them when we are going into battle. When we leave iraq and afganistan the flag will be turned around.

because I don't walk backwards. The field of stars always occupies the position of highest honor in the mounting of a flag, such as in the upper corner when mounted on a flag pole. Unless, of course, you're in distress, in which case the flag would be upside down.
