I think it turns yellow because it hasn't been receiving its daily dose of oxygen and sunlight. Grass stays green from the sun, you know...

As the stone is kept on top of the grass, the sun's heat is absorbed by the stone. Therefore, the grass in that area gets burnt and thus turns yellow.. . It also turns yellow in the absence of sunlight.. !!!!!!!BYE!!!!!!!

The grass will turn yellow because of the lack of sunlight. It has chorophyl in its leaves which require sunlight to be active. No sun, the green pigmentation on the leaves start to fade....

The stone excludes the sunlight from the chlorophyll within the grass. Any material placed on top will cause the same effect.
