What does the abbreviation R.V.S.P. mean in French and why is it used in letters?

Respondez-vous sil vous plait (please respond).. . This means you have to tell the host whether or not you will go to the party.. . Even if you cannot go, the RSVP means you have to say you won't be there. This is especially important because it allows the host to plan the event properly (seating, food, etc).

It's RSVP - Reponde S'il Vous Plait. In English it's Response required if you please and is normally used on formal invitations.

It's RSVP, and it roughly translates "Please respond". We use the letters because the words are too long, and many people don't read French here (in the US).

Répondez S'il Vous Plaît (French: Please Reply; commonly seen on invitations) . Sadly we use a lot of french in our language......

RSVP stands for Respondez Sil Vouz Plait. In plain english it translates into "Reply if you please" or "Reply back if you want to". They are generally put on invitation cards for marriage etc with contact person details mentioned below it.
