Best answer
Because the Inn, where they are staying, is closed and locked. So the Wart finds a sword in a stone and pulls it out and gives it to Sir Kay. That's where it get's exciting.

the inn was closed because everyone was at the tournament. Arthur finds the sword in the stone in a nearby church yard.
