when a horse has been ridden all day at a fast pace, and then put in the stable without being watered and groomed, they are considered rode hard and put away wet. When this is said about a woman, it usually means they look a lot older than they are, and look like bar hags or crack ho's. It also means they look a lot better from far away, or that if they took off the make-up you wouldn't want to be seen with them.

well that is definitely not a nice thing to say to anyone, and if Someone said that to you they are crazy you can tell just by that little picture that you are a very young and beautiful lady with a lot of years and miles left in you

the phrase refers to horses - originally. when you use it talking about a person, it means they look tired, exhausted, completely worn out, and their hair looks like it may have been wet and then matted, without being washed or combed out.

just think about it. it's not a compliment.. if someone called you that just make sure you're not so friendly to them next time

Actually, I've heard this term used in a non-derogatory way, to simply mean that one looks exhausted or worn out. . . Gotta love some of the answers that are not answers.
