my dog does the same thing and it annoys the $hit out of me!! I have no idea why though. Usually she wakes up in the middle of the night and will scrath her ribs or something and shake my whole bed. I think it may be dry skin or just an 'itch' she needs to scratch!

Probably dry skin. Don't dry her with a hair dryer, let her dry naturally (in a warm house, don't let her out while wet). I was once told to put a tablespoon of cooking oil in my dogs food in order to add oil to his diet. That was a long time ago, you might want to ask a vet first. Good luck to you and her.

Allergies. You could rinse her several times with vinegar then rinse again, paying particular attention to her paws. But assuming there was no residue from the products, and you get it all off with lots of water, she may have developed some allergy to something in her environment. See a vet if it doesn't clear up by tomorrow.

the only way she would truly be flea or tick free is by using a topical product such as Frontline Plus or K-9 Advantix. Going to the groomer doesn't mean that the fleas are gone. Even though she has been on the same food, it is possible to develop a food allergy.. . She may also have other skin conditions such as mainge, skin mites, or other disease processes. Call your vet and get her in as soon as you can. An itchy dog can tear up their skin from scratching in a matter of a few hours.

Your dog probably has dust mites. The dog will lay under the bed and other places that you can not reach with a vacume cleaner. When the dog lays in her bed some of the mites will get off but will remain there so when the dog goes back to the bed the mites are still there. They can not be seen by the naked eye. You need to wash sheets, pillow cases ,and everywhere the dog has gone where there is carpeting, rugs, her bed,etc... Give the dog a good bath after you do this or the problem will remain. If you have carpeting in the bedrooms you will need to take the beds apart and vacume under them . Also wash her cloth bed and any cloth toys that the dog carries around. You should notice a difference in a couple of days. Look up dust mites if you want to read up on them. Good luck.

We have a Westie who started scratching and actually was pulling his hair out of his back haunches. Our Vet checked him out and felt he had developed an allergy to something. He was given a cortisone shot and we gave the dog 25mg of Benedryl every day for several weeks. This seems to have helped some. Now we are in the process of having blood tests done to determine what the allergy is and help us to know what additional actions we need to take. I advise you to take you dog to the Vet for a check up! You both will feel better!

There are several reasons why your dog could be scratching all the time. Fleas are a good starting point but you say the dog was just groomed so it is unlikely that is the problem. My next guess would be that maybe the groomers didn't get all of the shampoo rinsed out. This can cause some dogs to itch and scratch uncontrollably. Some dogs just itch all of the time and if you ask your groomer to use an oatmeal shampoo or a shampoo with tea tree oil in it that may help and condition them real good or give them a hot oil treatment. It can take a couple of times of using the new shampoo though before you see any significant results. Try brushing them at home more often too. This stimulates the oil glands in their skin and can help with itching. Allergies would be my next guess. After you have tried my first shampoo/conditioner suggestions with no luck the next time you go to the groomer ask them to use a hypo allergenic shampoo and not to use any conditioner unless it is medicated or hypo allergenic as well. If the problem gets better then continue with this in the future. If it doesn't get any better after trying these suggestions then it is time to go to the vet. They can run test to tell you if your dog has allergies or not and what those allergies are and if the problem isn't allergies they can give you prescription shampoo and conditioner to help with the problem.
