Why do spelling errors on Yahoo Answers cause anxiety?

The biggest problem with education is the politically correct BS and all the self-esteem building.. In the 'good old days' self-esteem was earned through accomplishment.. Now it seems they reward failure as much as success.. . He can't read, write, spell, add or subtract, but he sure has a high opinion of himself.. And he is SURE he is being discriminated against when he is not hired.. It couldn't possible have to do with the fact he is illiterate, has 13 visible piercings and is dressed like a vampire.

Lol, yes it can be frustrating. I don't even mind all the short cuts, but sometimes people type things that don't even seem to be words.

Yes I do! I am a mother of 5, 3 of which are in school, we moved mainly because of the school system. I was in shock when I found out that they never gave spelling words and tests after a certain grade....what kind of crap is that? One of my biggest pet peeves is mispronounciation and bad spelling, so it kills me when I see questions on here that you can't even read. People just don't seem to care anymore how dumb they look and sound when they can't spell, or pronounce words right. My kids call me the 'word police' because I am constantly correcting people...I just can't help it!

Well the education system over there. English is my first language but I’m not American, European here.

Oh my --- I think we're soulmates. It's not just the typo's, it's the crazy abbreviations everyone is so used to from chatting, etc. I was even proofreading a paper my son wrote a few weeks ago and he had "bc" written instead of "because" and went crazy!! He thinks I'm nuts, but I'm glad to see I am not the only one.

We as teachers do what we can to teach children proper English during the school day. Parents, you have just as much responsibility to teach your kids at home though good modeling. The parents' notes I recieve at school are often very similar to their children's writing. I also believe that people who read often (not online... actual paper BOOKS) seem to be better spellers.

I couldn't agree more!!! It is one thing that drives me crazy, that and poor grammar! I think now days the consensus is, "it's good enough if someone else can understand what I mean". Well, sometimes I can't...

Especially when they have spell check. That may not help those who don't know English very well since they may be unsure of which word to substitute.
