Exact copies of tax returns can be requested with a Form 4506 (Request for Copy of Tax Return). As of 01/01/04, there is a $39 fee for this service.. Tax return transcripts generally used for student loans or home mortgage purposes, may be obtained free of charge by calling 1-800-829-1040 or can be requested with a Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return).

The IRS can provide you with a copy of your 2004 tax return. (Provided, of course, that you filed a return that year.) You can get your return in two very different formats.. . 1-Transcript. This is a computer printout of your return showing all the major line items. It may or may not be a complete transcript of every item on your tax return, depending on your particular situation. Transcripts are FREE, and you request them by calling the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 OR by filling out Form 4506-T. (This first link below is for Form 4506-T in PDF format.). . 2-Photocopy. This is an actual photocopy of your tax return. The IRS will need to dig up your tax return in their warehouse, photocopy it, and mail you the photocopy. It COSTS $39 PER YEAR you are requesting. You use Form 4506 to request photocopies of your return. (The second link is to Form 4506 in PDF Format.). . William Perez. taxes.about.com
