At my clinic we do shihtzu and lhasa rescue, i guess a couple ways to tell would be 1. underbite, all shihtzus have it 2. shihtzus have eyes that pop out of their heads, theyre not in the eye socket like a lhasas would be 3. shihtzus are stalkier, lhasas are usually thinner, mostly you can tell the difference in the face, shitzus will have an underbite, bigger, bulging eyes, and a very short snout, while lhasas will have a longer snout, and normal eyes. Hope this helps.

I have worked around dogs my whole life, these days it's so hard to tell the difference because of overbreeding. Lhasas are stalkier than shih tzus, a little heavier. Lhasas are supposed to be bigger than shih tzus, but that's not the case anymore. If you have a dog without papers it's almost impossible to tell the difference.

Go to the AKC site & READ THE BREED STANDARDS!. . The odds are very high that you have a mutt.

Look on-line and see what the differences are and figure out what you have. Also sometimes they are mixed together so it could be a mix of both. Or call your vet and talk to them about it.

If you can get a hold of some one that breed one of the kind not both. See if it looks like it then go to a breeder that breeds the other breed and see what your dog is most like.Your dog might be a mix too.
