Ale - made with a top fermenting yeast, ales are described as "hearty, robust, and fruity." . . Lager - made with a bottom fermenting yeast, lagers are characteristically "smooth, elegant, crisp, and clean."

the yeast.. . in a lager the yeast rises to the top as it consumes the sugars. ales yeast sinks to the bottom.

Ale is a top fermenting drink wear the yeast stay floating on the top while converting sugar to alcohol, a lager uses a bottom fermenting yeast

fermenting temperature as well, ale room temp, lager cold. and to comment on the above, there are some damn good lagers from craft brewers and imported. The domestic giants give it a bad name among wannabe snobs that don't go the extra length to find out the old world beginnings of "lager" and "pilsner"
