Why do cats make a strange chittering sound when they watch birds and squirrels outside the window?

They are just saying to themselves how delicious that bird or squirrel would be. Or maybe they are saying, "One false move and I've gottcha!"

Cuz they see dinner, but can't have it! It's hilarious. Even my outdoor cats do it, and end up scaring away their pray (thank goodness)

According to cat expert Desmond Morris tin his book Catwatching says this is known as a tetanic reaction. It is a vacuum activity, the cat is performing it's specialized killing bite, as if it already had the animal in it's mouth. The cat unable to control itself at the sight of a juicy animal will do this.

Cats love to hunt, that's just their natural behavior. They are most likley curious and excited to see the birds outside of the window. Cats do take a heavy toll on wildlife so it is best to keep a bell on your cats collar so he or she can be heard by the birds while outside. Some species of birds are declining due to too many pet cats breeding and becoming wild or Ferrel. (So I think its best to keep your pet safe inside)..and give them lots of toys to keep them busy. I think they are trying to lure them in.Sweet talking to them. I love it when they talk to them, from a distance of course.

lol i have wondered the same thing, i have heard it before to when we had a cat. i dont have an answer for youm but it is funny
