How can I recharge a magnet?

You can't. The polarity of a magnet is set. If you screw it up, sorry!

You cant re-charge a magnet. If 1 of your magnets are not working any more, it means that it is used out and you would probably have to get a new magnet. Or else, maybe the magnet is not working on what you put on. Maybe it does not work on that item. . . Things that is would work on: Refigerators, freezers, a speical kind of magnetic board you can get at a store. . . Things it wont work on: Pennys,dimes,quarters, your computer( front or back ), your bed( some beds are made out of metal ). And maybe even more!. . Well, i have nothing else to say really,. 1. Placing the item in an external magnetic field will result in the item retaining some of the magnetism on removal. Vibration has been shown to increase the effect. Ferrous materials aligned with the earth's magnetic field and which are subject to vibration (eg frame of a conveyor) have been shown to acquire significant residual magnetism. . 2. Placing the item in a solenoid with a direct current passing through it. (In case you didn't know, electrical currents create magnetic fields.). 3. Stroking - An existing magnet is moved from one end of the item to the other repeatedly in the same direction. . 4. Placing a steel bar in a magnetic field, then heating it to a high temperature and then finally hammering it as it cools. This can be done by laying the magnet in a North-South direction in the Earth's magnetic field. The magnet is not very strong; however, the effect is permanent.

You cannot achieve much of a "recharge" with ordinary equipment available to you. However there is a way that will give a weak restorative effect to a (bar not horseshoe) magnet.. . Float the magnet atop a board in a plastic pan of water and allow it to come to rest "pointing north-south." Carefully remove it and hold it in the exact same N-S orientation as when floating on the board then repeatedly strike one end of the magnet sharply with a hammer. Wear safety glasses lest a chip of metal break off.. . The blows from the hammer will jiggle the magnetic domains in the magnet to realign with the earth's magnetic field. The process will work on any bar made of iron.
