What are some effective methods to get rid of hiccups?

My dad taught me a way that always works. Plug your ears and nose and swallow 5 times without breathing. If you can't swallow 5 times, just do the most you can.

here's what usually works for me...hold your breath as long as you can, kind of in your throat...drink a glass of water really fast while holding your breath...the other home remedy that always works for me if I have stuff on hand is to suck on a lime doused with bitters and sugar...kind of gross, but it works!
