Insure it both during the shipping and through your homeowner's insurance. Make sure you put lots of padding around it, and place it in mutliple containers. I've lost items in the mail before because the envelope ripped. Ask for a signature on delivery or do a hold at shipping location and pick it up.

Safest way is to put it into your pocket,get into your car and drive to CA. Since this is probably impractical, use a reputable shipper such as Fedex or UPS and insure the daylights out of the thing.
