Also proably because alot of people are not open minded . nor do they explore intelectual stimulation as much as some should. most well versed people are very mis-understood.

Americans misuse the word. It has become more of a slang word for coincidences and being sh*t out of luck. Americans don't really think about what they say before they say it. They will pretty much pick up anything they hear if it sounds right. I wish there were more intelligent, literate people in this country!

That seems a bit prejudiced... Granted, I'm a bit more sympathetic with the British way of thinking... Even so, I understand irony and I"m American... my love and i get into discussions like this all the time... But anyway, it's not that "most Americans do not understand irony." It's just that most Americans don't think at all... Believe you me...
