How can I send a text message from the internet to a friend's mobile phone?

You have to go to the site of the carrier of the cell phone. I know that Metro PCS and Cingular have this feature I assume most do. But it is usually limited to a certain number of characters.. . Good Luck.

If you are using aol/aim.. you add it to your buddy list like this... +14805555555 it will show up on your list. Now you just write on the window like its a normal screen name... I think its the same for yahoo but I am not 100% sure on that...There is no charge to you but it might cost your friend a text...
