Best answer
One of the fastest ways to start the intellectual protection process is to Copyright. It is much faster than a patent, and gives you time to think about whether or not the patent process is necessary.

lol I am currently at a Patent Office.. I work there... I just asked the Atty. and she said that Patents can take anywhere to 1-6 years... depending on the thing being patented. Copywrites only usually take a couple of months.

Not sure about legal filings, but package your specs, and mail them to yourself (registered). as long as it remains unopened, the postmark will protect your idea from that date.

Try selling the idea to a board game company (if you don't want to patent).
