Why is it that .hack// merchandise is only available online and not in physical stores?

Because Wal-Mart or Target wouldn't have any idea what they were selling. Even places like Gamestop or EB Games wouldn't carry hacked game units. Partly because it would hurt their sales and partly because it aids in things like piracy. So, to avoid those touchy issues, chain stores avoid these items.

They do sell it in stores. I got part one from a retaill location. However, the series was overpriced, and contained too many parts. Many places stopped carring it after the second one. In the United States it simply wasnt popular and stores were relecutant to order it because the earlier parts did not sell. Therefore, only places on the internet have bothered to do so. You can still find copies in stores that sell used games.

I saw it at the local Hastings a few years ago. They may still be selling .hack stuff.
