Why are North and South Carolina separate states instead of one state called Carolina?

Because up here in North Carolina we just can't bring ourselves to forgive South Carolina for that annoying "South of the Border" attraction. You people should be ashamed of yourselves.

when states entered the union they did so by population and area, we slowly moved from north to south and different peoples settled the different states.

You missed it by about 240 years. At one point in time North Carolina and South Carolina used to be combined and called Carolina, but it was split up before the American Revoulution.

Not sure about the history of it all, but they certainly have different mentalities about laws and such, that would make it difficult for them to combine today...

It's really because small farmers in the area now known as North Carolina and rich plantation owners in the area now known as South Carolina didn't see eye to eye.
