Best answer
The Postal Service is run like a business, and postage is its primary source of revenue. Costs to deliver mail (wages, gasoline, etc.) have risen, and prices to buy stamps have had to be raised as well.

Because of increased costs, mainly higher fuel costs for distributing mail.

I think it has to do with E-mail. And they are rasing the stamp rate on Jan. 8th. This Sunday!

The US Postal Service is a quasi-independent agency of the government, and does not rely on tax money for operation.
