They were to small to carry the volume of cargo they had and expected growth. The 727 was a fuel hog. Although, they were fitted with better, fuel efficient engines, they still required more fuel than a larger 2 engined cargo plane.. . When you can fly a large Boeing or AeroBus for 1/3 less than a 727, and fly longer distances, it's a no brainer!
