Bloody good question! I wondered that to, since they are hurtling to earth at 400 miles an hour why wear a helmut? Especially when it was to suicide.

The helmets have earphones, microphones and breathing attachments. It keeps them warm since it gets to be cold up there.. . Yes, they at least gets to the target comfortably before blowing themselves up.. . The same reason why suicide bombers still eat breakfast in the morning.

well, most likely because they needed them to communicate with their squad. the helmets held radio equipment.. . but as for the crashing part, they did not know if they were going to have to crash or not.. . only the planes that were hit were flown into enemy ships.. . they tried to fight and live, but would try to kill the enemy, even if it meant death.
