You must have a social security number to work in the United States, or permission of our government, you are punishable by our laws governing this issue. You can receive a card allowing you the rights to be here only for specific endeavors or specific time restraints if you are not an American citizen.

if you have nothing to hide than there should be no reason why you can't get a social security number. even college students and household workers all have social security numbers.
