Why is the Federal Reserve System commonly referred to as the FED?

The FED is neither Federal or a Reserve system. Anything but.. . . It is a PRIVATE non-government corporation.. . . Look in the White Pages for the FED.. . . It is not in the Blue (goverment) section.
