people who arent asain seem to have some strange obsession with asain culture. i guess thats flattering but its kind of funny too since most of the time they dont know whats going on and try to fit in with what is going on. im asian but not chinese or japanese so i would check with chinese/japanese people i KNOW i can READ chinese or japanese if i were gonna get an asain tattoo. or else im pretty sure my tattoo is gonna say something like "im stupid" and all the chinese/japanese people will be laughing at me.

I would ask the person what their tatto means and they would always say:.."If I tell you,I'll have to kill you."These people don't even know what "it" means themselves.I laughed really hard and pointed as if I knew.

People are fascinated with Asian cultures. Chinese characters are not only words, but a form of art as well. It's no different then having a picture with Spanish, English or French words in it.

I have one. I use it to mean something to me and noone else since most won't be able to read it. Is it real? Yes. My daughter in law is Japanese and verified it for me.. . Why? For me, I tend to have alot of respect for their culture and the honor they hold in family - or rather the unique sense of belonging and commitment they feel responsible for regarding their culture and heirarchy.

Ask the number of people including NBA players who have gotten symbols that they thought meant one thing and actually mean something else because of different chinese dialects.

I think that they think it makes them look exotic. They do it because they want something new and different, but they should consult someone who knows the language first before they make a mistake.

Once I wore a necklace with a chinese character, which I later found out means "Pervert"..... If I ever get a tattoo, be assured I would triple check what it means.. I guess people think Chinese characters are beautiful and thats why they get them. I see your point, it must be silly cuz you can actually read them and not see them as an abstract symbol. . I mean if somebody wrote something completely random in English alphabet like "elephant", I would definetly think of an elephant first instead of thinking how beautiful the word looks in that lovely Garamond typeface.......
