Explain the difference between filing taxes as single and head of household.

A head of household is a single person supporting a relative that lives in the same house. You must support with at least 50% of their expenses which would include their share of the rent and food. This status is usually for a single parent.

Single usually refers to someone without any dependants. Head of household may include a single person with dependants whether you are the legal gardian or sole caregiver.
