Why do some people refer to American cops as '5.0'

It comes from an old TV cop show called "Hawaii Five-Oh", starting Jack Lord. There never was a real state police force by that name, but it struck a cord in the public's imagination, and half the police forces in the country have that nickname at one time or another: ". Detroite 5-0", "Dallas 5-0", etc. Even the police force at the college that I attended had that nickname.

It was the name of the Hawaiian department that Steve Garrett ran. It's only applicable to Hawaii and that Television show.

That came from the tv show Hawaii 50, 50 represent Hawaii as the 50th state of the union. It is nothing official, it is slanguage.
