Because people are too lazy to bother checking facts. Instead they just believe any old thing they're told and retell it in turn. You see this in everyday life, when people gossip.

I quess,you could ask the same question,about why do people still believe he discouvered America...I'd say pure ignorence.Once that stuff is printed in history books,people believe it's the truth and don't want to accept it when the real truth is revealed
