Most, if not all, symbology in Western art comes from legends and religion. A good understanding of classical mythology and a diverse understanding of religion would be beneficial. Also, art is not created in a vacuum, but rather a direct response to the time it was created in; understanding world events from the era of the art would provide the ability to add context to the work.
