A psychiatrist is an MD who can write perscriptions for medications, while a psychologist cannot. Yes, that is true, but the other differences are more slight.. The psychiatric philosophy tends to view mental illness as neurochemical imbalances, and as more of a medical condition to be treated. most psychiatrists do not perform cognitive therapy or behavioral modification therapy or any kind of 'talk' therapy at all. They see you, they treat you, you go on your way.. A psychologist is more interested in why you are ill, not just how. What factors in your life influenced the negative thought patterns, what interventions can be performed to give you insight into your behavior and instill coping mechanisms to deal with it in the future. usually, in psychologists work with psychiatrists, as a team, to optimize the chances of reaching an effective cure or control of your mental illness

A Psychiatrist is usually paid for and you don't really choose to see one. Psychologists on the other hand, are usually an option and you have to pay for them out of your own pocket.

Psychiatrist receive more training in recognizing physical conditions that manifest as emotional or psychological symptoms. Such as Hypothyroidism causing depression. The other answers are correct as well in that psychiatrist can prescribe medications and therefore much of their treatment will be directed at managing medications and evaluating their effectiveness. On the other hand psychologist have spent more time training as a classical psychoanalyst or in behavioral modification approaches. If I were not interested in using medication for treatment I would seek a good psychologist. I think also psychiatrist are geared more to 'what do we need to do to fix the problem' where psychologist are geared to uncovering the possible source of the problem as a means to ending the problem. In choosing a psychologist one should not expect quick fixes and be prepared for the likelihood of long term therapy. There are many other differences but these are a few that hopefully will make it easier for someone to decide which they prefer. They both have advantages and disadvantages, but the most important factor in choosing is not whether they are psychiatrist or psychologist but how you interact and the relationship you are able to develop with the therapist.

Psychiatry is a medical specialty dealing with the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of mental illness – both in itself and in bodily illness ('psychiatry in medicine') – such as clinical depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders. . A psychologist is a scientist and/or clinician who studies psychology, the systematic investigation of the human mind, including behavior and cognition.

The psychologist has a master's degree in psychology, and can give therapy. The psychiatrist has an MD and yes, prescribes medicine, as well as giving therapy to some extent, though in the hopsital the psychiatrist usually just manages the case and leaves therapy up to recreational and occupational therapists. I suspects the MD has some training in psychology, but probably not a whole degree's worth.

Ummmmm..... the answer you gave is 100% accurate, and about as detailed as one can get. The psychiatrist has more years of schooling under their belt, but that's pretty much it. The difference is not really very complicated.
