How can I gently let my friend know that he has a tendency to make mistakes without hurting his feelings?

You can tell him he is not a deep thinker and that not to worry because many people aren't or you can not say nothing. Some people are just smart in different ways so unless you are a certified specialist in "smartness" and if he asks for your opinion only then should you tell him what you think. Until then I'd keep your mouth shut and worry about your intellectual level.
