Why is Hong Kong considered a separate entity from China?

Because England used to possess Hong Kong as a place of commerce. They continued to occupy it even though China became a powerful and civilized nation. In 1999 England handed Hong Kong back over to China but Hong Kong is still exempt from many of the laws of commerce that other Chinese areas are subject to

Actually, Hong Kong was ceded back to the People's Rubpulic of China in 1999 (from England). Many parts of Hong Kong's unique culture are carryovers from British rule, which is why Hong Kong seems so different from the rest of China.

Hong Kong is the little island JUST next to China. When China became communist, Hong Kong (I think) still belonged to England, so it wasn't communist. Now, Hong Kong uses long-form characters and has something like a free-market, while greater China uses short-form characters and is, still, communist.

Under the "One Country, Two Systems" policy, Hong Kong retains a lot of autonomy from China and has a capitalist economy.. . (I think some people here are confusing Hong Kong with Taiwan.)

because it used to be a british colony til 1997 and, as a special administrative region, is still run different from mainland china.. . eta:. to the guy below: where do you see someone confusing hongkong with taiwan here? since when did taiwan belong to the british?

Because it is a "Special Administrative Region" with a certain degree of autonomy and is the most democratic section of the country. Further, it was separate from China for many years.
