First; Vietnam was only considered to be a "conflict", wasn't upgraded to a war until much later...During the "conflict" american forces weren't ALLOWED to fight to win...Also keep in mind, the USA was the very last country to try thier hand at solving the issue, which was basically a civil war we had no business in...BTW, I was there at the end, during the fall of Saigon as an Airborn Ranger...Also Vietnam was the USA's first experience with "guarilla warfare", government didn't learn much or we would be able to do more against "terrorists"...

Mainly because a bunch of dems started the war. Good thing Nixon was there to pull us out of that hellhole.

Everyone lost the Vietnam war. Everyone loses in every war.. . War itself is our only real enemy, other than ourselves.. . Any war that is started, is already lost.

A few reasons.. . 1) We couldn't put our full military force against the Vietnamese communists because if we did, we would have probably drawn China and Russia into the war, who were supporting Ho Chi Minh.. . 2) A bunch of distinct non-Vietnamese guys running around all over the place make easy targets... and how do you tell who is on your side when they're all Vietnamese? How do you tell a village with mainly communist sympathies apart from one that is south-sympathetic? . . 3) Guerrilla warfare. The north was using the same tactics they used to boot the French. How do you fight an enemy that is made up of resistance cells with home territorial advantage? . . 4) Politics. The war was widely unpopular after the initial reaction to the Gulf of Tonkin incident. We were there to advise and train the saouth Vietnamese army, which was never ready to take on the North.. . Sound familar? *cough*IRAQ!*cough*

Vietnam was of no real interest to the USA. The American people learned that only after the Vietnam war started. We ( The American people ) demanded the troops to pull out and it happened on 30th April 75. But the American people have short memories. Look at Iraq. They did not do 9-11 and we went into their country and bombed them. We will fail there too.

well basically it was sheer determination of Vietnamese people and if we look at it technically it was due adverse climate, the support of international community to Vietnam and china's and USSR's back channel arms supply.
