Are you perhaps thinking of the article written by Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair? If so, look at the site below. It is one of the possible answers.. . If you are thinking of The 39 steps picturized by Alfred Hitchcock in 1935, it was written by John Buchan in 1915 - the first in a series of 5 about Captain Richard Hannay.

Do you mean the 39 steps? If so it is a movie by Alfred Hitchcock. As regards the 49 steps there are various possibilities including instructions in the art of Wudang Taichi sword or a Jewish guide to awakening or even how to make a rose out of paper, to name but three. Can you give any more information about the possible subject matter??
