In the final analysis, the Confederates were out numbered and out supplied. Arguably, Lee was a superior General to Grant but there's only so much you can do when you are outnumbered.. . Thanks for your excellent question.

There where more westpoint graduates in the confederate army then in the union army they could of won and probably would of won except the union army attacked Georgia considered their supply line oops just about the entire confederate army was somewhere else.

Economy was agrarian, not industrial. Fewer resources.. . Outnumbered.. . Confederate gov't type was weaker than federal type; less command and control.

the south was agrarian with little to no industry. they relied on foreign trade coming in by sea. the north blockaded the main ports of the south and the south eventually got tight on supplies.
