What were the main differences between the North and South in 1864 during the American Civil War?

Basically the biggest difference was in the economic structure. While the North did not have "slavery" per se, they offered low paying jobs and sub standard housing to the lower classes mainly non-whites. The south openly utilized "free" labor but more often than not their "slaves" were treated better because even though the platation owners might not have thought of them as people they did value them as an asset to their business.

Mostly the South was losing and the North was winning. The Confederates were not doing too well. They were fighting with fewer men and those men were often ill-equipped and not fed well. They were losing battles and were being outmaneuvered by Grant and Sherman. The North, on the other hand, had plenty of men and the factories of the North fed them and clothed them adequately. The North had finally found the good leaders they needed to win the war and there was really nothing to stop them from winning it.

One thing I would like to clear up about the civil war is that it was NOT about slavery. It was about state's individual rights. When Lincoln freed the slaves in the South, he kept his slaves. The president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, didn't even believe in most of the agreements made by the South but he did believe in their right to run there states how they choose. By the way, many slaves fought on the side of the Confederacy. Don't get me wrong, the right side won and I in no way agree with slavery. I just think more schools should teach the real issue behind the war.

By 1864 the war had already been going on for four years. Like wars are prone to do it had a devestating effect upon the southern army, economy, government and population. One of the many differences in the northern and southern populations during this period was the war was a economic boom to the north due to its industrial capability and opportunites for war related contracts. Being more rural and agraian the south did not have the industrial capacity to support a war effort for a sustained period. This phenomenon helped to devalue southern currency and the southern economy. When the southern economy started failing this negatively affected the south's ability to afford an army and caused wide spread poverty for civilians.

North had the following advantages:. manpower, firepower, finance.. South's only advantage was in on-field leadership in that they had Robert E. Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson (until he was accidentally mortally wounded by a fellow Confederate) while the Union had U.S. Grant.

The main difference was slavery. The north was against it and wanted the south to conform to their ways. They wanted the states to unite. The south didn't want to change their ways and evolve with city life. I don't know what part of the country you are from but I'm from North Carolina. Even now things have changed over the last 142 yrs but things are still different here than other parts of the country. We are still behind times on everything. We don't have the FAST pace lives like people from bigger cities. We are still friendly to stranger we meet. We have Southern Hospitality. I really think this is some of the things they were fighting for. Things that we all in the south are proud to have carried on throughout the years.
