What is the legal procedure when a person on trial for war crimes passes away during the trial?

There must be a defendant in the caser or there is not case. This means a defendant who can mount a defense. In the case of a dead person they can't do that so there is no case.

I don't know for sure but wouldn't the trial be over? They can't punish someone who is dead.
